With losing becoming a tradition in Minnesota sports, i could have swore i was in a dream when the final score came up and the bottom line said, "Minnesota, Puerto Rico Invitational Champions." It wasn't pretty, my hands were sweating after Trevor Mbakwe's yelp and collapse, it was boring with the refs getting a little boner from every time they blew there whistles, but the kids got it done in the end. From the tip you could tell that it was going to be physical, and some West Virgina player, Casey Mitchell made Blake Hoffarber look silly on defense. Now i really wanted to write something mean about Colten Iverson because he has not been my favorite player, but he was the catalyst to this victory over the Fussineer's. I got more and more enjoyment throughout the game as Iverson and Mbakwe hammered there way inside to cause a foul and hearing the avid West Virginia fans complain and tantrum. Now he did has his moments where Iverson bounced the ball off his body out of bounce, or where he rips one down and passes the ball, unaware that Gold is not the same as white. I give him credit for stepping up in the place of Ralph Sampson who was out most of the game in foul trouble. And if Iverson and Mbakwe wasn't enough to win it, Al Nolen's great senior leadership (thank you Mr. Sharp for the expression) showed he could end up playing at the next level. He started the game driving and making the defenders look like Supe during Inception. Than later in the game, the Mountaineers tried to collapse, which gave Nolen the open lane to dish it out to Hoffarber who found his stroke later in the game. Once Mitchell pissed me off enough to leave the room after his 5-5 start from the field, it looked as if Tubby had it as well, when he switched Nolen to guard the him. After that, Mitchell was shut down besides some ugly missed rebounds that he daintfully laid back up for an easy basket. Rodney Williams, for the first time this year, showed that he still has some maturing to do as a player. It just seemed like the whole game he couldn't get into a rhythm and was actually out "athletisized" by his opposing player. After collecting my thoughts about this game, i realized how lucky we are to live in Minnesota at sporting events. We don't have to put up with drunk 40-60 "super fans" and a coach who jumps up and down throwing his fist in a rage every call that doesn't go his way. Instead we have a coach with a glare, that says just as much as any word you can pick out of Websters Dictionary, fans who actually know enough knowledge to make a reasonable educational input about the game, and a basketball team who is very fun to watch. I saw wearing the opposing team's jersey, Kevin Noreen who instantly became an announcers favorite. One time he tripped to the floor as a ball rolled out of bounce and it was like love at first stumble. The whole time he was in for the rest of the game they praised the gift to West Virginia basketball as he sliced through our defense with unseen quickness, double double performance to ignite his team to victory... That is what the announcers were acting like the whole 5 minutes the kid got into the game... And that is my rant. It's nice to see that with the cold winter coming up, that people can watch a successful hometown sport again while procrastinating there school work.
I'm going to make this portion of this post short and brief. I should have had someone quote me when i said that the Vikings season was over, and just like Anthony Hererra, the season came tumbling down in the dome. Here are the things i would do by the end of the year if i had a say in the Vikings decisions.
1. Bench Brett Farve. Well not at the start, i mean we do want the princess to keep his record of games started in a row going... I mean that is the reason we brought our version of the "big three" to get him and the reason he came back right? You take him out so you can put in Travaris Jackson and Joe Webb so you can start stage one of life without Farve. With McNabb's extention in Washington, we don't have a veteran to count on to save the team, even though we can look right in our own organization to fill the void. Jackson has not been given the fair chance and Childress's "project" has to show it wasn't a waste of five years.
2. Start looking for a new coach. Now I don't think Childress deserves or does not deserve to be fired, but Tony Met's future telling cards (99% reliable) are showing he wont make it past the Super Bowl. When you lose your locker room has rapidly and to such an extent as Childress, you should probably just cash in the millions we will owe you after we dump you. Look at Leslie Frasier first off, He is a guy who has led this defense since Mike Tomlins departure and look what happened to him? Frasier looks like a guy who can control the personalities of this team, because with Farve gone, all the personalities will be on defense. And if for some reason he isn't worthy of the opportunity, go find someone who has fire and the passion that can show the players he knows what he is doing. Childress just kept putting himself in a bad situation. He came here with a bad team and started the "Jackson Joint" out for a while, then went with the boring plays for a few years that had fans falling asleep, and than brought in Farve than Randy Moss, whose personalities overwhelmed the quiet, soft spoken Childress. We need to search for someone who can control a locker room and push this team to its potential.
3. Do better draft scouting. I know its only half way through the season and you can't really judge a rookie class for a couple years, but right know 2010 Vikings draftees are duds. We traded out first round pick so we could pass on the explosive Jahvid Best to draft a physical, raw corner, Chris Cook. Who was made a fool by Aarron Rodgers picking on him the entire first half till his benching. Toby Gerhart had yet another fumble early in the game today as the player who was known for his ball carrying abilities at Stanford, racks up his total for the season. Nate Triplett didn't make the team and other rookies haven't seen significant playing time as of yet. After literally giving away our 3rd round for Moss and getting nothing in return, the Vikings need to know that if they have another unsuccessful draft, the team could start to crumble in the coming years. Needs the Vikings have to look for is Center, Guard, Tackle to replenish this broken down line that was supposed to be one of the better ones in football. Without them, our new Quarterback (assuming we don't send the Fierce Four down to Mississippi next year for another pep talk) will not be protected on his blind side and Adrian Peterson wont get the cut back lane he likes so much.
I still don't know what the purpose of me writing this blog is. I'm just happy the Gophers won and it gives me another procrastination strategy.
clever line about inception. for a constructive debate however as mush as i like watching him play, Al Nolen does not have what it takes to play in the NBA, its just not gonna happen..
